UNIDO articulates on Energy Management System, ISO 50001 by holding Nation-wide stakeholders Workshops

December 12th, 2018. With the aim of assessing and aligning competencies of energy professionals and public actors on Energy Management System (EnMS) with special focus on ISO-50001, a number of nationwide workshop were organized in Lahore, Karachi and Islamabad from 4th to 12th of Dec 2018. These workshops were conducted by international trainers/consultants and were attended by a large number of private sector energy professionals; as well as officials from Public Sector , Central bank & financial institutions , chamber of Commerce & Industry  ,  academia and development sector organizations including SMEDA , NPO , NEECA , Ministry of Energy , PNAC , PSQCA ,, SBP, KCCI and LCCI , USAID , JICA and IFC .

These Workshops were conducted as part of the activities under the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) programme ‘Sustainable Energy Initiatives for Industries in Pakistan’ funded by Global Environment Facility (GEF).  The ultimate goal of this UNIDO/GEF Project is to avoid greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by developing and promoting a market environment that will stimulate energy efficiency projects in industry which, in turn, will support industrial development in Pakistan.

The objective of these workshops was  to brainstorm and devise the strategy by engaging relevant stakeholders on articulating roles and functions of different national actors for the promotion of Energy Efficiency (EE) through building a strong grounds of Energy Management System Implementation. An insight was provided to the public stakeholders on what could be the instruments promoting the Energy Efficiency from the regulatory, Financial and social perspective. The trainer presented best global models and policy level interventions which could be replicated at National Level.

The participants presented their findings during the workshops  highlighting   the gaps , barriers and challenges faced during EnMS Implementation process and the instruments that could be put in place to initiate a country strategically driven journey to inbuild continuous improvement process towards Energy Savings  and achieving Energy Efficiency targets .

. One of the main highlights of these workshops was a first ever exclusive session on Energy Management system organized for female energy professionals. The motto was to leave no one behind and  to ensure gender-mainstreaming in energy sector of Pakistan by encouraging  women energy professionals, to play an active role in the Energy Efficiency drives .

Moreover , as part of these workshops separate sessions were arranged  for  assessing and aligning the training Programs on Energy Management System for Energy Auditors & Managers,  aligning Certification Bodies in National Energy Efficiency and Energy Management System (EnMs) Implementation Strategy and to assess the competencies of national trainers , consultants and energy managers in line with ISO 50001 EnMS,

  During the Workshop on public sector engagements in National Energy Efficiency and Energy Management Implementation Strategy ; the Chief Guest Mr. Ashfaq Mahmood, member PM Task force on Energy, , highlighted the commitment of the Government of Pakistan in tackling the energy issues of Pakistan and applauded UNIDO efforts for bringing public- private sector stakeholders on one platform for devising national strategy on Energy Efficiency to achieve the government's mandate . Guest of honour, Mr. Sajjad Haider Yaldram, Joint Secretary Ministry of Energy, mentioned that government is working on a very fast pace to overcome the energy crisis in Pakistan through taking tangible measures and render full support to UNIDO in its endeavours to promote the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency in industrial sectors. Mr. Carlos Chanduvi Suarez, UNIDO Project Manager from UNIDO Headquarters in Vienna, welcomed the participants and shared his thoughts and perspective on  developing a national level Energy Management System strategy through articulating the roles of public and private sector stakeholders and how UNIDO could act as facilitator to catalyze the Energy Efficiency activities in country through establishing a sustainable platform for all national actors .

Ms.  Nadia Aftab, UNIDO Country representative while addressing the gathering described the activities of UNIDO in context of energy efficiency and its related facets in Pakistan contributing towards localization of ISID and SDG 9, industry, innovation and sustainable infrastructure.  She said that by promoting energy efficiency for industrial applications, the programme aimed to reduce the adverse impacts of industrial processes on the environment as well as to help increase the resilience of communities to climate change.

The workshops  concluded with some concrete recommendations and instruments including regulatory and financial that could be put in place to promote the Energy Efficiency and Energy Management System in Pakistan.
