Biomass Combustion technology

Biomass combustion such as simply burning fuel wood to provide heat, power, or  sophisticated systems such as combined heat and power (CHP) is a source of energy for producing renewable biomass resources to providing sustainable services in the form of heat , power and electricity. We can find several broad applications of biomass combustion which are heat (for domestic use), industrial use for both process heat and electricity production, combined heat and power (CHP) uses in the sugar, paper and board industry and also in the production of electricity. Each of these applications will use different biomass materials according to the local availability of such fuels. Among the types of biomass mostly used is cellulosic fiber (wood, straws, stalks, nuts shells, etc.) Industrial use of biomass combustion takes place in a combustor or furnace with the heat being used in a manufacturing process, or to generate steam in a boiler which can expand through a steam turbine to generate shaft. The produced shaft power or electricity can be used directly to drive a mill or other machine. During combined heat and power (CHP) systems first electricity is generated using heat from the combustor and from the exhaust of the system low temperature heat is taken for preheating of other heating sources. If properly undertaken biomass combustion is climate neutral with respect to greenhouse gas production. This is because during biomass combustion process the carbon dioxide released is equivalent to what was removed from the atmosphere by photosynthesis, and thus maintains an equilibrium level of carbon dioxide, unlike the combustion of fossil fuels which increase the level of carbon dioxide by releasing the carbon that was long ago stored in the earth.
